Marquis de Lafayette Print Collection, 1776-

Consists of close to 1000 images of Lafayette in portrait and of scenes relating to his life. The prints are mainly examples of the engraving and lithographic printing processes. The collection contains the work of engravers and artists from several countries, including France, England, America, and Germany. Among the prints in the Caricatures series are two lithographs by noted artist Honore Daumier. Major groups of prints date throughout his involvement in the American and French Revolutions up to 1792 and after 1817 when he resumed his involvement in the political scene in France. In addition to the 18th and 19th-century prints, the collection includes process prints, which are generally of lesser quality and include images clipped from publications, postcards, and posters.

Born Marie Adrienne Françoise de Noailles; married the marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) in 1774.
